Desires of Home
Our European journey ends with this last post of desires of home, which we compiled on our final days in Bologna and finally today has been published to the blog:
- The orange and sharpness of cheddar cheese – In Switzerland and Italy only white and predominately odorous cheeses are to be found.
- Nutella vs. Peanut Butter – Hazelnuts, hazelnuts, hazelnuts! Where are the almonds, pecans and peanuts?!?!
- Ham is not just for Easter in Italy.. let me count the number of types of Proscuitto.. (think Bubba Gump Shrimp)
- Pizza sauce? Everyone knows that sauce makes the pizza! Where are the ingredients?!?
- Pancakes, waffles, omelette’s, Oh my! American breakfasts are greatly missed.
- Hot and spicy – Can someone please tell us where we can find a buffalo wing and beer special?
- Dog owner etiquette – In Bologna, poop bags are optional. Careful where you step…
- Dress Etiquette – As we awkwardly discovered, Italians dress for the season, not the weather. 80 degrees (F) does not permit wearing of a sun dress and flip-flops in October
- Dark Beer – A porter or stout can only be found at a rare pub. A dark bottle is an endangered species at all supermarkets. We sincerely miss the brews at Barriques, Harmony Bar and our neighborhood Glass Nickel.
- Oatmeal raisin-chocolate chip cookies, Laux-Lang Xang takeout, Campfires and Smores
- A full closet of clothes – I never thought one missing sock could be such a big deal. Although, the search can be quite dramatic with only two pairs each, including spousal accusation and blame.
- Mistaken Identity – We are not tedesco/tesdesci (Germans)! We are Americans, more simply Wisconsinites!
